最初的兩卷包括第7版完整的內容，以及歐洲藥典委員會在2012年12月全會上通過或修訂的內容，共收載了2224個個論，345個含插圖或色譜圖的總論，以及2500種試劑的說明。變化的內容（插入或刪除的內容）在頁邊標注出
自2014年1月起，在歐洲藥典成員國，包括歐盟國家，將執行第8版并取代第7版。第7版至12月31日都是有效的。歐洲藥典有英文版與法文版，英語與法語是歐洲委員會的官方語言。歐洲藥典有印刷版、USB閃存版和在線版。其西班牙文版正在翻譯之中，將來包括在在線版中，不再另收取費用。
歐洲藥典：
一部藥品與藥用物質的標準
歐洲藥典是歐洲藥品質量控制的標準。已有多項法律文件使歐洲藥典成為法定標準：
2009年經36個歐洲國家和歐盟批準的編撰歐洲藥典協議；
關于人用或獸用藥品的歐盟指令2001/82/EC、2001/83/EC（修正案）和2003/63/EC，維持了歐洲藥典對在歐洲上市藥品的強制執行性。這些標準規定了藥品、生產用原材料與合成用中間體成份的定性、定量和所用的檢驗項目。所有藥品、藥用物質生產企業在歐洲銷售或使用其產品時，都必須遵循歐洲藥典標準。
歐洲藥典的內容具有法律約束力，由行政管理或司法部門強制要求符合歐洲藥典。成員國的國家當局必須采用歐洲藥典，必要時可替代相同物質國家標準中的個論。
歐洲藥典的內容包括活性物質、輔料、化學、動物、人或植物來源的藥用物質或制品、順勢療法制劑和順勢療法原料、抗生素，以及制劑和容器等。
歐洲藥典還適用于生物制品、血液和血漿制品、疫苗和放射藥品。
